4 Ways AI Will Improve the Way You Work

4 Ways AI Will Improve the Way You Work When AI springs to mind, you cant help but think of the endless possibilities it could bring. With machine learning, robotics, and more, breaking new grounds year after year. Its exciting to think where we could be by 2030. The perception of AI, though, and what it means to our jobs, hasnt been taken lightly by most people. It would be fair to say that many are wary of AI, maybe even scared of what it means for them, and their livelihood. I, on the other hand, am more excited at what AI can bring to us. What it can do to make us, more efficient and more productive. Really at the end of the day, thinking of how it can improve us. 1. Productivity The first and the most documented area of effect in which AI will make its largest impact is our  productivity. Ricoh Europe  report that 65% employees and workers say AI technology and machine learning enables them to be far more productive.  This is because it minimizes repetitive tasks and enables them to access better quality data. Productivity is essential because maximizing your productivity levels defines what level your business is operating at, and how effective you are as a business. Embracing AI will in many ways enable you, and your  business, to become a much more productive. 2. Efficiency The second point is efficiency, and while it is closely linked to your productivity, how efficient you are related to the quality of your work. While AI makes you more productive, in terms of minimizing the quantity  of your work, AI also makes you more efficient in terms of the quality  of your work. Youre spending less time on low-level tasks like sifting through thousands of candidate CVs, and more time on things that require more critical thinking and adding value to your business. 3. Innovation So while we are becoming more efficient and productive in the way we work, we will have more time to spend on areas that require more critical and innovative thinking. You have all this data that would have taken you 500 hours to do, but a machine did it in 5 minutes. AI  will do all the data analysis that you dont like to do. It will spot opportunities, trends, and themes. Then you will have to apply your abilities to that data. It will encourage  you to spend more applying your mind, and your creativity. And because of this, I believe we will be able to work at a much higher level than we have become accustomed to. 4. Relationships The idea that we will be able to improve how we service customers but also lower the costs of this, has to be one of the most intriguing areas of opportunity. We already deploy the likes of Chatbots for various customer relation services, and this trend will continue to improve as we further develop how to manipulate customer service data and natural language processing into a real personal service for customers. The inevitability of an AI-based customer service in the future for all companies is clear, its a service that does not sleep, it can make friends, it can build relationships and it never makes the customer wait.

Why go to the Manchester Medicine Careers Fair University of Manchester Careers Blog

Why go to the Manchester Medicine Careers Fair University of Manchester Careers Blog Why go to the Manchester Medicine careers fair? It’s on Wed 31 Oct, 16:00-18:00 in Whitworth Hall You’re going to be a doctor right? Your career decisions are already made? Maybe. With 30 plus specialities to choose from, how can you know which might be right for you? Research completed here with UoM students (including medical students!) has shown that those making an easier transition into the next stage of their career do certain things whilst studying here. And the Manchester Medicine careers fair makes at least three of these very easy: communicate, connect and explore! Here’s a little run through of things the fair can give you. Conversation While looking online and attending talks or presentations can be helpful when thinking about your medicine career path… nothing quite beats being able to actually speak to a professional who is living the role. Having the chance to approach someone in the know who is willing to share their experiences is easily the best way to get the answers to the real questions that are on your mind. At the fair you can cut to the chase with professionals and experienced practitioners and gain a lot of insight from their experiences. People love talking about themselves (especially qualified Doctors…sshhh) so you generally don’t even have to ask that many probing questions at fairs like this one. It’s easy. Confirming Ideas and finding new things Maybe you know you want to go on and become a Psychiatrist and you’re more than happy with that. Great. But… you’ve never been a Psychiatrist before. You may have never met a Psychiatrist before. You may well have no idea what a day in the life of a Psychiatrist is like, what their challenges are, what their working conditions are like, how the different branches of Psychiatry vary to one another. This is where a fair comes in handy! You can turn up and see loads of people from different specialities, or just quiz those who are working in the one (or few) you’re interested in. The fair allows you to compare specialities and to ask those specific questions about what it’s really like. We literally gather everyone up and make them sit in a room just for you this is a great chance to have uninterrupted time quizzing clinicians that would usually be dashing about and hard to track down. The truth By just looking on websites and doing research online it can be really hard to gauge what a speciality that you’re interested in is actually like. It’s hard to gain a balanced idea of both the positives and negatives of various medicine career paths when there’s no one to ask that’s actually experiencing it day-to-day. The fair gives you the chance to find out about some of the negatives related to certain career paths as well as the positives. At a fair you get to see clinicians from loads of different places and you can ask them “what are some of the challenges you struggle with here then?” and they are happy to give you the truth of their typical day. It can’t hurt Bluntly, instead of coming up with ideas not to go â€" it won’t hurt! You may end up staying for hours getting an insight into things you never even considered, or you may be done within half an hour and end up grabbing a coffee. Either way it won’t hurt so give it a go, as it’s very competitive out there when you graduate! Should Feminists Avoid These 4 Companies

Should Feminists Avoid These 4 Companies Have you heard the Uber news? No â€" not the taxis, or the driverless cars news. The misogyny news. Recent allegations from Susan Fowler, a former site reliability engineer at the company, assert that both the Uber management and HR department subjected her and her female colleagues to appalling sexual discrimination. Her accusations have not gone unnoticed; as of late February, her original post has almost 5000 likes and quotes from the articles have  been disseminated through the national press. Fowler’s story highlights one important issue in large businesses: the dangers of a faceless, unsympathetic HR department that doesn’t take sexual harassment seriously. Stories surface again and again of women dismissed for calling men out on their actions, or women offered jobs only on condition of sex, or women patronised into believing their skillset expendable. We took a look at some recent controversies from some of the biggest companies on the planet. Uber First things first: the recent Uber controversy. On February 19th, a tell-all post was uploaded to Susan Fowler’s blog, in which the tech worker detailed all the sexism she encountered in her 13-month stint at the company. The internet duly imploded and the story was covered in all the major news outlets, prompting Uber chief Travis Kalanick to institute an extensive internal investigation. Fowler’s account of her time at Uber is comprehensive. Highlights include being threatened with a poor performance review by a serial company sex pest in exchange for reporting him, being berated for keeping email records and having one HR manager tell her that “certain genders and ethnic backgrounds were better suited for some jobs than others”. She finally left the company when a manager threatened to illegally fire her for ‘causing problems’. Through all these incidents, Fowler jumped through all the right hoops, reporting issues to HR and compiling evidence in written form. Unfortunately, HR was part of the problem. Nor was Fowler the only woman to leave the company in that period. “On my last day at Uber,” she writes, “I calculated the percentage of women who were still in the org. Out of over 150 engineers in the SRE teams, only 3% were women.” The press that Fowler’s post has garnered should ensure that Uber fixes this, fast. Magic Leap Magic Leap is one of America’s biggest ‘unicorns’. Valued at over $5 billion, the augmented reality company claims to be developing revolutionary VR technology about which little is currently known. However, recent comments from Tannen Campbell, a former employee, have not only threatened to shatter the company’s air of mystery but have denounced it as a ‘hostile workplace for women’. Brought on in 2015 to fix the ‘pink-blue problem’ â€" that is, the mostly male workforces  inability to appeal to a female demographic â€" Campbell found that her ideas were consistently dismissed and fellow female colleagues patronised by the men of the company. Incidents included an IT officer who claimed that his department avoided “the three Os â€" Orientals, old people, and ovaries.” Eventually, after attempting to challenge CEO Rory Abovitz on his attitude, Campbell was fired. A lawsuit investigating the affair reads: Due in large part to its gender imbalance and the misogynistic attitudes and behavior of its male employees, including executive management, Magic Leaps corporate culture is one of macho bullying, where womens work and ideas, including those of Campbell, are ridiculed openly and their opinions are ignored in favor of those of those of their male counterparts. The deficiency is, the suit says, to Magic Leap’s own detriment. Sadly, because Magic Leap seldom hires and does not actively recruit female candidates, the company loses competitive advantage to products like Microsofts Hololens, it claims. Microsoft, which employs far more females on its team, developed its similar product on a faster time line with more content that appeals to both genders. Fox News Dream of getting into TV journalism? Not if you’re a lady and not if it’s with Fox. When Roger Ailes, CEO of Fox News and TV Stations Group, was forced to resign last year, it was in a storm of sexual harassment allegations. From female news anchors to producers, women from across the network alleged that Ailes had propositioned them, demanded sexual favours in return for work and, in one case, had them demoted for speaking out. You’d think the CEO’s resignation would be the end of it. But even when Ailes stepped down, he was gifted $40 million as an exit agreement. Problems at the company are far from over; as of February 2017, federal prosecutors continue to investigate 21st Century Fox Inc. Andrea Tantaros, one of the network’s accusers, likens the company to a ‘sex-fueled cult’. Exciting as that sounds, we think it’s probably a bad thing. Facebook Though it might be the poster-company of Silicon start-up mega-success, Facebook is far from the techie haven it imitates â€" at least, for the few females on its staff. Following the release of ‘Chaos Monkeys’, a tell-all book written by former employee Antonio Garcia Martinez, it has become clear that sexism lives in the online giant’s offices. According to the book, female Facebook staffers are advised to wear modest clothes to avoid ‘distracting’ co-workers. Over the last year, Facebook has seen a 40% increase in staff, but only a 1% increase in female representation. And a recent article from a former Facebook Trending contractor accuses the company of favouring male employees over herself. “I often found that when I reported a problem with the Trending tool or a discrepancy in the guidelines, my claims were dismissed,” she writes. “When a man would report the same problem, he would be congratulated for noticing the problem… I found myself speaking up less and less, until I got to a point where I no longer reported any problems or errors I encountered… ” The result was a loss of talent over the year she worked there. “Several women, including myself, reported sexism by managers and editors to their direct supervisor and in their exit interviews to no avail,” the former employee writes. We wonder if they’ll pay attention now? 5 Tips for Interviewing While Employed Everyone at some point in their career has to start interviewing while employed. The average job tenure in the United States is only 3 to 5 years, which means an employee must stay on top of the latest job interview strategies. They must also know how to interview for a job without the boss knowing. After all, who wants to create suspicion in the workplace that you are thinking of leaving?Staying sharp may involve attending interviews for jobs you have no interest in. These tips below will help you interview while employed.1. Don’t Quit Your Day JobWe all perform better in job interviews when we already have a job. It is human nature. Interviewing while employed will help your confidence in an interview. You are not desperate to find new work. If the job interview is a complete mess, at least you still have a job the next day.Already having a job will also give you the confidence during salary negotiations. It’s easy to ask for what you really want when interviewing while employed because you have nothing to lose.2. Keep It on the Down LowYour career belongs to you and nobody else. No one needs to know your business. Most of all, no one needs to know that another job has sparked your interest. The last thing you want to do is become the subject of office gossip. Your colleagues are co-workers, first. They do not need to know you are interviewing. Yes, it is great to have friends at work. Still, the best way to keep it confidential that you are interviewing while employed is to avoid telling anyone. By all means, do not write about your job search on LinkedIn or Facebook. Also, try not to drop hints. For example, one day you come to work dressed in your regular clothes people see all the time. Then, the next day you dress nicely for an interview, everyone sees how great you look, and they get curious. The next day, you dress in the same clothes you always wear. Your colleagues will ask questions. Play it cool and maintain business as usual in your current workp lace to avoid dropping hints.Learn how to prepare for a job interview including what to bring, what to wear, and more.3. Use Personal Technology for Interview PlanningYour company email address is not owned by you. It also exists on a company server. The last thing you want to have is a written record showing you are interviewing while employed. If your boss finds out you are using your current job tools to schedule an interview, it will become a problem for you.Plan all your interviews at home with your own email, and on your own devices. You own them and can do what you want with them.4. Schedule Interviews During Lunch or After WorkChances are the person who invited you to an interview already knows you have a job. If you schedule your interview during a lunch break, or after work, they will understand why. If they demand you interview at a time that puts you at risk in your current job, turn the interview down.It is actually easier to schedule an interview when you have a job. T he reason is, you have a solid answer to the question, “What is a convenient time for you?”. Interviewing while employed gives you the leverage to say, “I am too busy”, which makes you look important!Check out thesesigns it’s time to quit your job.5. Use Vacation or Sick DaysYou earn your vacation and sick days, so you may as well use them. When you know you have an interview scheduled, be nice to your current company and take a vacation day to attend. If you cannot tell them you have an interview, at least you are giving them a chance to plan ahead.Doing this also helps you properly prepare for an interview. If you are interviewing while employed, you will feel more comfortable knowing you did not have to sneak out of work. You won’t feel rushed to return to work from a lunch break, breaking out in a sweat! Finally, if you are interviewing while employed, it does not make you a disloyal employee. It makes you a smarter employee. Jobs change faster than ever before and yo u need to be ready for it!

Reader Mailbag - My Industry Opportunities Are Shrinking! - Career Pivot

Reader Mailbag - My Industry Opportunities Are Shrinking! - Career Pivot My Industry Opportunities Are Shrinking! This is the third ina series called Mailbag, wherein I respond to readers’ questions about career issues. I have been in printing sales (direct mail) for 23 years. Been in the business for 30 years and graduated college for this field. My industry opportunities have shrunk, especially in my home state. I would like to find a position where I can use my direct mail knowledge and skills to manage a large company direct mail program. Roger â€"â€"â€"â€"â€"â€"â€"â€"â€"â€"â€"â€"â€" Roger, As we discussed, direct mail is a dying industry. It is not going away, but it will continue to shrink. Technology allowsthese kinds of programs to be managed from anywhere in the world. A good example of this is SendJimwhich givessmall businesses the ability toaffordably run direct mail programsâ€"all from their smartphones. I suggest two options: Find a sales position in an adjacent industry, like commercial printing Find a sales position in a complementary industry, like shipping or logistics The idea is to find a position that allows you to transition to an industry that values the core skills you attained in the direct mail industry. You stated: I would like to find a position where I can use my direct mail knowledge and skills to manage a large company direct mail program. My question to you isâ€"will this type of position be around in 10 years? If the answer is no, then it is time to make a pivot. I have a friend who was spat out of a marketing position in the direct mail industry 10 years ago (during the great recession). She has successfully transitioned her marketing skills to a new industry. It was really difficult, but shedid it! Sometimes you need to follow the Nike motto â€" Just Do It! More:Waiting is not a job search strategy. Do I Really Need a LinkedIn Photo? I want to clean up my LinkedIn profile. In order to avoid age discrimination, do I really need to have a profile picture? Listen to the most recent episode Larry Larry, The short answer is YES. Without a picture, the odds of someone clicking on your profile drops precipitously. The long answer is that you need a photo that delivers on your brand promise. Your photo should tell me something about you. You might want to read my recent post called Job Search Ageism: What You Need to Know. Your appearance delivers a message about you. I suggest you seek out an image consultantâ€"or at least a friend who has good taste in color and clothes (something I do not process as I have no taste)â€"to help you. It is absolutely critical for you toget outside opinions on how you appear to professionals, both in person and in photos. Once you have posted a picture, use the website PhotoFeeler.com to gainfeedback.
